Skid Row : Skid Row
This is a splendid debut from one of the
better MTV generation bands of the late 80s and early 90s. Face it, Sebastian Bach is one
hell of a vocalist and this band's work is insanely catchy. It went multi-platinum. So
What? Although it's very commercial sounding in nature, it still holds that sharp 80s
metal distortion that keeps it biting and grooving right along without ever getting boring
or tiresome.
Opener "Big Guns" starts things off with a nasty riff, leading right
into Sebastian's semi-spoken vocals that build into his trademark choruses. "Sweet
Little Sister" has a nice, swinging groove throughout, reminiscent of Dr.
Feelgood-era Motley Crue. "Piece of Me"
stands out with its sharp, addicting riffage. "18 and Life" is the way
a ballad should be: great songwriting, not over-emotional, and well, it just kicks ass ;).
"Youth Gone Wild" is damn catchy, fast, and has a strong, memorable
chorus contained within. Album closer "Midnight/Tornado" ends things on
a good note with a beautiful melodic solo during the midway mark.
Despite the overall commercial nature and over-exposure by MTV, Skid Row is one of
the strongest debuts to emerge from the shadows of the 80s. Great stuff that gets even
better from here on out. Eighties' metal fans, Skid Row should be right up your alley.
